New Patients

Initial Visits

New patient visits typically take between one to two hours. The physican will decide at the visit if allergy testing is indicated based on each individual's history.

For possible allergy testing, patients need to stay off any antihistamines for at least 72hrs prior to the appointment. This is because antihistamines interfere with allergy testing. However, if it is too difficult for you to stop your antihistamines for any reason, please do not stop the medications. In that situation, it would be best to come in for an initial evaluation with the physician to decide on the best course of action.

Examples of antihistamine medications:

Benadryl or dyphenhydramine
Chlorpheniramine, Brompheniramine
Atarax or Hydroxyzine
Claritin or any of its generic equivalents
Zyrtec or any of its generic equivalents
Allegra
Xyzal
Astelin nasal spray
Patanol or Pataday eyedrops
Optivar eye drops
Zaditor eye drops
Elestat eye drops
Many over-the-counter cold and sleep medications may contain antihistamines.

Asthma inhalers and Singulair are NOT antihistamines.

If you are unsure if a medication you are taking is an antihistamine, please call our office.
